Differentiating natural car noises from potential warnings can be challenging, but one thing you should never do is ignore them. In its unique way, your vehicle could be attempting to express what’s troubling it and the actions you can take to come to its aid.

Squealing / Chirping

High-frequency squeaking is more than a persistent annoyance to the driver – it’s often a hint of a lax or worn belt. If you believe the squeaking or chirping originated from your engine, it could be your serpentine belt, which energizes your alternator, power steering pump, and water pump. Schedule a service appointment with our technicians immediately, as a fragmented belt can result in overheating, loss of power steering – and a substantial repair bill.

But before you do, make sure the squeaking is coming from your engine and not your brakes. Manufacturers deliberately place a tiny piece of metal in your brake pads, which releases a high-pitched squeal to notify you that your brake pads are wearing thin. The health of your brakes pads needs to be monitored, but replacing them is much more routine (and less pricey) than changing your serpentine belt.

Knocking / Tapping / Pinging

No, it’s not someone trapped in your car’s hood (hopefully). A banging or ticking coming from the engine might be due to a problem with the engine bearings. These bearings support the engine’s revolving structures – and they’re not reluctant to alert you when they’re wearing out.

Clunking / Rattling

Ongoing thudding in your engine is one of the most alarming car sounds, as it’s an instant indicator that something – possibly something crucial to your safety and security – is unattached and out of position. If you’re not able to identify what’s out of place yourself, get a professional set of eyes on it pronto.

A subtle rattling or deep rumble may be a more worrying sign, as it typically signals a failing catalytic converter. Unfortunately, the sole option in this case is to entirely replace the converter. Whooshing / Hissing

Typically, these sounds are triggered by a leak in the exhaust system. If left unattended, this leak can decrease both engine functionality and fuel efficiency. Numerous reasons could be behind the leak: punctures in the muffler, catalytic converter, or exhaust manifold are all plausible causes. Continual scraping noises are often the result of transmission problems and are most noticeable when shifting or changing gears. (Automatic transmissions cause juddering and shuddering instead of a scraping sound.) Look for additional signs of defective transmission, such as leaking fluid, a burning smell, or a power loss. Seek advice from an expert or certified specialist immediately to avoid expensive transmission repair charges.
